1. The Great Rejection - vs. 47-49

Matthew 26:47–49 NASB95
47 While He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.” 49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Hail, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.
What did we learn about last week?
Where were the disciples?
Who was Jesus speaking with?
What do you know about Judas?
Who was with Judas?
What would have been going through your mind if you were in Judas’ shoes?
What are the commands in these verses?

2. The Delicate Response - vs. 50

Matthew 26:50 NASB95
50 And Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.
Who is Jesus talking to?
How does He address them?
Why do you think that Jesus addresses them this way?

3. The Abrupt Reaction - vs. 51-53

Matthew 26:51–53 NASB95
51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus reached and drew out his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. 53 “Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?
What would you do if you were standing by and saw this unfolding?
What do you when you hear your friends talking about Jesus in a negative way?
Why do you think that Peter responded this way?
What are the commands in these verses?
How many are in a legion? (6,000)

4. The Biblical Response - vs. 54-56

Matthew 26:54–56 NASB95
54 “How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?” 55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56 “But all this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures of the prophets.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.
What do you think is significant about Jesus’ response?

Luke 21:37–38 NASB95
37 Now during the day He was teaching in the temple, but at evening He would go out and spend the night on the mount that is called Olivet. 38 And all the people would get up early in the morning to come to Him in the temple to listen to Him.
John 8:2 NASB95
2 Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them.
John 18:20–21 NASB95
20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret. 21 “Why do you question Me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; they know what I said.”
